Qualified Health Claim
In 2004, the FDA released the following language on omega-3 fatty acids and the reduced risk of coronary heart disease:
"Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. One serving of [name of food] provides [x] grams of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids.”
Structure/Function Claims
On products targeting the general adult population:
- DHA supports [maintains or helps maintain] brain, eye and heart health.
- DHA supports cardiovascular health.
- DHA supports healthy brain function.
On products targeting children 6 years of age and younger:
- DHA is important for optimal brain and eye development.
Nutrient Content Claim
If your product contains a minimum of 32mg of DHA per serving (RACC), you can use a Nutrient Content Claim such as:
- An excellent source of DHA
Alternate language includes:
An example of the full nutrient content claim on a product with 32 mg of DHA would be:
- Excellent source of DHA. Contains 32 mg of DHA per serving, which is 20% of the 160 mg Daily Value for DHA.
